How to have a six pack after 50
•Posted on April 14 2026
This guide is the culmination of years of hard-won experience, packed with actionable tips to help you achieve a six-pack and feel better at 50 than you did in your 20s.
Drawing from my own transformation—from battling weight and hormonal imbalances to discovering the science of genetics and epigenetics—I’ll show you how to unlock your body's potential. Whether you're in your 40s, 50s, or beyond, it's never too late to start your journey to optimal health and strength.
My Journey
As a young gymnast going through puberty, I was placed under intense pressure to lose weight and maintain an unrealistic level of thinness. I was tall and athletic, which didn’t fit the mold of what was considered “acceptable” in the sport. This pressure led to massive self esteem issues around my weight and body image.I tried every diet and program out there in an attempt to shed more weight than was healthy or realistic, resulting in the dreaded yo-yo cycle. I developed eating disorders as a result, and by the time I reached my twenties, I tried to maintain control through excessive exercise
This is when I became an ultramarathon runner, racing in some of the world’s toughest endurance events for over 25 years. I was leading expeditions and pushing my body to the limit, convinced that extreme exercise, besides the joy of having adventures and pushing my limits, was the key to managing my weight. Ironically, I got the opposite result—I became inflamed, hormonally imbalanced, and gained more weight despite all my efforts. It really hit home when I ran the entire length of New Zealand for charity doing 2250km or 52 marathons in 42 days and put on weight while doing it that I realised something was not right with my endless cardio/weight maintenance program but I didn’t know what to do instead. It wasn’t until I discovered the science of genetics and epigenetics at age 48 that things began to change. I began to decode what true health, hormonal balance, and lower inflammation levels meant for me, personally.

So if you're over 50 and you've been told that the belly fat, the low energy, the mood swings, and the "it's just your age" story is your new normal – I am here to tell you that is absolute rubbish
I am living proof that your best body is not behind you – it's ahead of you.
At 57 I have lower body fat than I ever had in my 20s and 30s, more energy, a sharper brain, better skin, and I did it while exercising 85% less than when I was running ultra-marathons across deserts and through the Himalayas.
I went from inflamed, hormonally wrecked, gaining weight despite running 2250 km in 42 days (yes, I actually put on weight doing 52 marathons back-to-back), to a lean and strong body – by finally understanding hormones, inflammation, cortisol, insulin, and training smart instead of hard.
Today I'm giving you the complete blueprint. No fluff. No "eat less, move more" or calories in calories out" completegarbage.
The real science that actually works after 50.
The Brutal Truth About Why Belly Fat Appears After 50 (And Why Long Cardio Makes It Worse)
When estrogen and progesterone plummet in peri-menopause and menopause, your body shifts fat storage from hips and thighs to the abdomen. That's the "menopause belly" everyone complains about.
Then testosterone drops → you lose muscle → metabolism tanks → you store even more fat.
Add decades of stress and sky-high cortisol, and your body goes into permanent "famine mode" – storing visceral fat (the dangerous organ fat) like there's no tomorrow.
This visceral fat pumps out inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-alpha, and others) that drive insulin resistance, heart disease, diabetes, and accelerate ageing.
I was the queen of cardio. Ran across countries covering more than 70,000km in my career and doing more than 140 ultramarathons as well as leading expeditions. And I got fatter and more inflamed for all my troubles.
The moment I stopped the endless running and started applying real science – everything changed.
Here are the exact steps I used.

The moment I stopped the endless running and started applying real science – everything changed.
Here are the exact steps I used.
Step 1: Map Your Hormones and your genetics - Stop Guessing, Start Testing
You cannot fix what you don't measure.
Get these tests if you possibly can or at least some of them.
You cannot fix what you don't measure.
Get these tests if you possibly can or at least some of them.
- - DUTCH Complete or DUTCH Plus (dried urine) – shows estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol curve, and how you metabolise hormones
- - Fasting insulin + HbA1c (if fasting insulin >7 you're insulin resistant – fix this first)
- - Full thyroid panel (TSH, Free T3, Free T4, reverse T3, antibodies)
- - Vitamin D, magnesium, B12- folate, homocysteine, omega-3 index,
- - Organic Acid tests.
- - Genetic Testing.
- - Full Blood tests including CBC, cholesterol etc
When your hormones are balanced, fat loss becomes easier, not a war.
Step 2: Kill Chronic Inflammation ("Inflammaging") or Forget the Six-Pack
The Stanford University and Buck Institutes "1000 Immunomes Project", The world's largest and longest human immune system clinical trial, proved that immune system decline is at the core of all ageing and that immunosenescence affects all 12 hallmarks of ageing. So it makes sense to start with your immune system.
When inflammatory markers like IL1B, IL-6, and TNF-alpha are high, your body holds fat "among other problems" as a buffer.
To that end I developed an immune age calculator that gives detailed and nuanced information for the practitioner and lay person alike about the health of your immune system and what areas specifically may be giving you trouble and then how to approach those issues. This is key to slowing ageing and building resilience, lowering inflammation and having more energy and vitality. It's also key to losing fat. You can check out the Immune Age Calculator at www.myimmuneage.life, but that is a topic for another day.
Fix your gut
70% of your immune system is in and around your gut. Leaky gut (epidemic in our society) = systemic inflammation = locked fat cells. This is just one of the key areas I focus on.
Step 3: Build Muscle Like Your Life Depends on It (Because It Does)
Muscle is the currency of longevity and your fat-burning engine after 50.
Every decade after 40 you lose 3–8% muscle mass (sarcopenia) unless you fight back.
More muscle = higher resting metabolism, better insulin sensitivity, higher growth hormone and testosterone, and myokines (anti-inflammatory compounds muscles release when you train them).
I ditched long-distance running (cortisol and hormone nightmare sorry ultra runners) and switched to:
I train less than ever and have more control over my weight than ever because muscle burns fat even while you sleep and because my hormones are dialed in.
Stop the hours of cardio. It eats muscle and spikes cortisol (not to mention it makes your face look older) . Build muscle and watch the fat loss. Ladies muscles are essential. I know for decades especially those of us over 40 were told - thinness is the aesthetic ideal. Flip that notion on it's head, sexy muscles are where it's at.
Step 4: Restore Insulin Sensitivity – The Master Key to Unlocking Stubborn Fat
Insulin resistance is epidemic after 50 and makes abs impossible.
How I fixed mine - goes beyond the scope of this blog but includes things like:
When insulin drops, your body can access stored fat. That's when the abs appear.
Step 5: Make Cortisol Your Servant, Not Your Fat-Storage Master
Chronic stress = high cortisol = belly fat, muscle loss, sugar cravings, poor sleep, poor immune system. .
My cortisol supportive protocol:

I ditched long-distance running (cortisol and hormone nightmare sorry ultra runners) and switched to:
- - strength training 3–5x/week (deadlifts, squats, pull-ups, presses etc)
- - Short HIIT sessions – maximum 1- 20 minutes - Running, Tabata, Cycling, Crossfit etc
- - Pilates + yoga for core and recovery, balance and lowering stress levels.
- - short cardio sessions - running, cycling, swimming, rowing etc. Usually under an hour
I train less than ever and have more control over my weight than ever because muscle burns fat even while you sleep and because my hormones are dialed in.

Step 4: Restore Insulin Sensitivity – The Master Key to Unlocking Stubborn Fat
Insulin resistance is epidemic after 50 and makes abs impossible.
How I fixed mine - goes beyond the scope of this blog but includes things like:
- - 1.6–2.2 g protein per kg body weight daily
- - Time-restricted eating (16:8 you can do occasional 24 hr fasts if adrenals are strong but not if you aren't - this need guidance.)
- - Berberine 500 mg before meals, B2 and Carnitine, EGCG and other supplements
- - 10–15 min walk after every meal
- - Omega-3s and magnesium and much more
When insulin drops, your body can access stored fat. That's when the abs appear.
Step 5: Make Cortisol Your Servant, Not Your Fat-Storage Master
Chronic stress = high cortisol = belly fat, muscle loss, sugar cravings, poor sleep, poor immune system. .
My cortisol supportive protocol:
- - Morning sunlight within 30 mins of waking - no glasses
- - No blue light after 8 pm
- - Magnesium threonate every night
- - Ashwagandha, Rhodiola, , holy basil or other supplements as required. Personalised to your specific case and genetics.
- - 10–20 mins breathwork/meditation daily
- - Contrast showers or cold plunges.
- - No food and definitely no alcohol 2-3 hours before bed
- - Quality salt in water 1/4 tsp unless you have blood pressure issues. (Consult your physician first)
- Sleep is non-negotiable. Poor sleep destroys hormones overnight. Treat sleep like the ultimate anti-ageing drug.
- Hyperbaric and Red Light Therapy, PEMF therapy and Hydrogen Inhalation - all supportive but not a must have.
Step 6: Detox Obesogens and Environmental Toxins
Your fat cells store toxins (BPA, phthalates, pesticides, heavy metals). When the body is toxic, it holds fat to protect your organs.
Deetox protocols are complex and personalised when I work with people, depending on test results but here some ideas:
Step 7: Personalise Everything With Genetic Testing
One-size-fits-all fails after 50.
I test my genetics so I know: (hit me up if you want to get your genes tested). This is the most important test you can do. Your genes never change, so it's a permanent "user guide" to your specific body and that is the key. When we combine this information with others tests, we get a very clear view as to what is going awry in your body and how to optimise it.
- - Glass/stainless steel when possible. Avoid plastic if you can
- - Filtered water
- - Organic food where possible, avoid processed food with tons of E numbers and chemicals and colours, preservatives.
- - Clean beauty products
- - Daily sweating (sauna or training)
- - NAC, Rejuvenate Pro, sulforaphane, zeolite

- Genetic testing will tell you so much from things like:
- immune system predispositions
- hormonal predispositions
- what foods to eat and when
- what types of exercise to do and when
- Your inflammatory risk factors
- Your brain health predispositions.
- much more
Genes are not your destiny but they guide you as to how you can optimise your health and life. It's information that empowers.
This is why some women thrive on keto and others get hypothyroid. Your genes hold the answers. This is absolutely key to getting it right specifically for you. No more guessing.
The Result?
At 57 I have visible six-pack abs, low body fat, endless energy, no menopause symptoms, and I train maybe 4–5 hours a week.
This isn't genetic luck.
This is applied science + refusing to accept decline.
